The area shown in this plan is the part of North Melbourne known as Hotham Hill. The detail of the plans shows a cross-section of the activities going on in the homes and backyards of the local residents. Details show fowl sheds, cow and carriage sheds, a coach house, a hen house, ferneries, a shoeing forge and a summer house.

Chief Commissioner of Police Frederick Standish wrote this telegram to Inspector Montfort on 29 June 1880, a day after the Glenrowan siege. Ned Kelly was to be transferred from Benalla to the Old Melbourne Gaol, via the North Melbourne train station. The Chief Commissioner requested that in order to avoid crowds, details of the journey be kept secret.

The employee history sheets in this series record the details of employees of the Victorian Railway Rolling Stock Branch,North Melbourne based in this instance. The information recorded includes personal details, dates of appointment, transfers and retirements, pay rates and, on the reverse, a listing of ‘punishments’ received for various misdemeanors.
A job with the railways meant some stability in life and the ability to work your way up the ranks. The employee history sheet for Abraham Robinson Monk shows that he started as a cleaner and worked his way to Engine Driver. Apparently, he accepted a pay cut in 1910 in order to stay in North Melbourne.

The volumes in this series contain photographs of specifically built, large, brick or stone State Schools throughout Victoria and photographs of types and sizes of schools developed as being suitable for smaller schools of various sizes. Each is labelled and most have appended the name of the architect(s) responsible for the design. Most are attributed to Henry Bastow who was, until c1892, Chief Architect of the Public Works Department (VA 669).
